
Nurse Joan
Joan Hlinomaz MS, BSN, RN, NCSN is an Ohio Licensed and Nationally Certified School Nurse currently in her 25th year of school nursing practice. She earned a Master’s of Science in Community Health Nursing and Nursing Administration from the Wright State University College of Nursing and Health (WSU) in 1992, a Certificate in School Nursing (WSU) in 2004, and Certificate in School Culture and Violence from the University of LaVerne in 2020. Joan practices as a School Nurse Consultant providing educational programs, resources, and support to school nurses. She has practiced as a School Nurse in public and private parochial school systems with students in grades PK-8th grade. Additionally, Joan has worked as faculty in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs teaching community health, school nursing, pediatric nursing and leadership in nursing.
Joan has served on multiple boards throughout her nursing career. A few of her most influential have been with the National Association of School Nurses (Ohio Director, Executive Committee Member, Advocacy Committee Chair), Ohio Association of School Nurses (OASN) as President (2018-2020), Shots (Vaccines) Across Texas (1994) , Future of Nursing school nursing forum (2019), and the Buckeye Healthy Schools Alliance (2005-2007). Joan has worked with government entities to advance the health of children and the access to school nursing services by providing testimony at both the state and national levels. She has participated on multidisciplinary teams at the state departments of education and health to develop and implement statewide policies, including the Ohio School Based Health Care Advisory Group and The Ohio Whole Child Advisory Group.
Joan has presented at conferences on topics such as School Nurse Advocacy Priorities, Everyday Leadership in School Nursing; Resiliency, School Nurses & the Whole Child; and The Role of the School Nurse in Decreasing Chronic Absenteeism. Additionally, she has expanded nursing evidenced based practice with two studies – Needs of Parents with a Technology Dependent Child Being Cared for in the Home (1992) and The Effect of a School-Based Physical Activity Program on Student Attendance (2005). Joan was the recipient of the 1992 Joann Ashley Leadership Award (WSU), the 2004 Carolyn Azbel Research Award (OASN), and the 2007 National Association of School Nurses Research Poster Presentation Award.
